Pirelli at the Goodwood Festival of Speed ~ Garagem Rio de Janeiro

Connectivity and sustainability are Pirelli’s watchwords at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, points that mark the beginning of a new era for tires. This harmony arises thanks to the implementation of sensors with the ability to collect and transmit information and the use of the most advanced materials certified by independent bodies in tire production. Progress implemented by the Italian brand in recent times and which now has two new chapters.

Pirelli Cyber is leading this new eraTM Tire: a sensor-based system from Pirelli that, for the first time, allows the tires – the only point of contact between the car and the road – to communicate with the vehicle’s stability control systems, including ABS, ESP and traction control. The information provided by the sensors is used to improve performance and safety. This technology will be adopted for the first time by Pagani Utopia.

In addition to offering better connectivity, this new era of tires will focus more on protecting the environment. Pirelli continues to invest in research and development, through the introduction of new materials that replace those of fossil origin and third-party certification that documents the origin, traceability and use of these materials.

An essential part of this strategy is the exclusive use of FSC certified natural rubberTM (Forest Stewardship Council) in all European Pirelli factories, until 20261. FSC forest management certificationTM applies rigorous standards that require the preservation of biological diversity and the economic progress of workers and local communities. A wide selection of high-end Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will use Pirelli tires with FSC-certified materialsTMwith the JLR group announcing, last July 11, a supply agreement with Pirelli for these products.

CYBERTM TIRE: TIRES THAT COMMUNICATE WITH THE CAR’S ELECTRONIC SYSTEM

P Zero Corsa, P Zero Trofeo RS and P Zero Winter are models developed specifically for the Pagani Utopia which have special sensors placed inside the tread. These sensors, connected via Bluetooth to the car’s electronics which manage the vehicle’s dynamic systems, provide useful information so that the car can select the ideal driving mode, maximizing the potential of the tires fitted. This dialogue between car and tires is made possible by software created and implemented by Pirelli, which works directly with the electronic «brain» of the car. For example, if the car is equipped with winter tires, the ABS will adjust its operation to reduce braking distances. On the other hand, with semi-slick tires, stability and traction control will adjust to take advantage of the maximum grip available. Without this information, all the systems that govern the dynamics of the car would operate more conservatively, using assumptions and engine maps that do not take into account the characteristics and performance of individual tires. This “technical knowledge” allows the car’s control systems to work more effectively, improving performance and safety.

Pirelli Cyber TechnologyTM Tire is a unique offer on the market, already present in some cars currently on sale, but it is now enriched with this new functionality, increasing the level of specialization of the car’s electronics, also with regards to autonomous driving.

ONLY FSCTM CERTIFIED NATURAL RUBBER IN TIRES PRODUCED IN EUROPE UNTIL 2026

By 2026, all natural rubber used in Pirelli’s European factories will be FSC certifiedTM: a process that has already been started and will be gradually implemented in all factories. FSC forest management certificationTM certifies that the plantations are managed in such a way as to preserve biodiversity and bring benefits to workers and local inhabitants. FSC chain of custody certificationTM certifies that the material is FSC certifiedTM has been specially segregated and is not contaminated by non-certified materials, from the plantation to the tire manufacturer.

On the occasion of the 2024 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Pirelli announced a collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for the supply of tires using FSC certified forestry materials.TM its entire range of luxury vehicles.

In 2021, Pirelli created the world’s first road tire with FSC-certified natural rubber and rayonTM. Other significant milestones on this journey include the introduction of tires made from FSC-certified rubberTM in Formula 1, since the first grand prix in 2024, as well as the debut of FSC certificationTM in cycling a few weeks ago with the new Pirelli P Zero Race RS2.

VIRTUALIZATION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ARE THE KEY TO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

New tools, such as virtualization and artificial intelligence, have accelerated the development of products and technologies, also thanks to Pirelli’s commitment to research and development, which every year invests approximately 5.5% of its revenues in the sale of high-value tyres.

These investments and methodologies have led Pirelli to leadership in the electric vehicle market thanks to Elect technology, designed to integrate the characteristics of electrified vehicles (both EV and PHEV). Pirelli also launched the P Zero E3 in 2023: the first UHP tire with over 55% recycled and bio-based materials, across the entire launch range of replacement tires (third-party certified according to ISO 14021), with a triple A on the European tire label, and the new Pirelli RunForward anti-puncture technology.

This product underlines Pirelli’s commitment to reducing the use of materials of fossil origin in favor of natural or recycled materials. So that customers can identify products that contain at least 50% recycled or bio-derived materials, Pirelli has created a specific logo to be placed on the sidewalls of the tyres. The latest tire to boast this personalized marking is the new P Zero Winter 2 Elect4launched a few weeks ago, containing over 50% of these materials (also certified by third parties).
