The Double Cleansing Method: Why Washing Your Face Once Isn’t Enough

At the end of a long, exhausting day, all you want to do is fall into bed. You quickly splash some water on your face, scrub it with your standard foaming face wash for ten seconds, rinse, and consider yourself clean.

But then you wipe your face with a white towel, and you notice beige streaks of foundation and grey smudges of city pollution left behind. You washed your face, but it isn’t actually clean.

Dermatologists and estheticians worldwide agree: washing your face once is simply not enough to remove the heavy, waterproof layers of modern life. Enter the Double Cleansing Method. Originating from Korean and Japanese skincare routines, this two-step process has revolutionized Western beauty.

If you are struggling with clogged pores, dull skin, or stubborn acne, the Folime beauty team is here to explain why the Double Cleanse is the absolute most important step you can add to your nighttime routine.

What is the Double Cleansing Method?

The concept relies on a very basic rule of chemistry: like dissolves like.

Your face is covered in two entirely different types of impurities at the end of the day. First, there are oil-based impurities (like waterproof mascara, heavy SPF sunscreen, and your skin’s natural sebum). Second, there are water-based impurities (like sweat, dead skin cells, and environmental dirt).

A standard water-based foaming cleanser physically cannot dissolve heavy oils. It just pushes the sunscreen and makeup around your face. The Double Cleansing method solves this by using two different cleansers, back-to-back, to tackle both types of grime.

Step 1: The Oil Cleanser (Melting the Grime)

The first step is applying a lipid-based cleanser—either a liquid cleansing oil or a solid cleansing balm.

How to do it:
You must apply the oil cleanser to a completely dry face with dry hands. Gently massage the oil or balm over your skin in circular motions for 60 seconds. Do not rush this step! The oil binds to the heavy, waterproof makeup, the thick layer of SPF you applied this morning, and the hardened sebum (blackheads) stuck inside your pores, literally melting them away.

Once the makeup is completely dissolved into a messy paste, wet your hands with warm water and massage your face again. The water will emulsify the oil, turning it into a milky, white liquid that easily rinses completely off your face without leaving any greasy residue behind.

  • Myth Buster: «I have oily, acne-prone skin, so I shouldn’t use an oil cleanser.» This is completely false! Oil cleansing is actually best for oily skin because the cleansing oil binds to the hardened oil (sebum) in your pores and extracts it, preventing blackheads without stripping your skin dry.

Step 2: The Water-Based Cleanser (The Deep Clean)

Now that the heavy, waterproof barrier of makeup and sunscreen has been removed, your actual skin is finally exposed.

How to do it:
While your face is still damp from rinsing off the oil, apply your standard water-based cleanser (a gel, foam, or cream cleanser). Massage it into the skin for another 60 seconds. Because the heavy lifting was already done in Step 1, this second cleanser can actually penetrate your pores. It effectively washes away the sweat, the invisible city pollution, and any lingering dead skin cells.

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

The 3 Massive Benefits of Double Cleansing

If spending an extra 60 seconds at the sink seems like a hassle, the long-term benefits to your skin will quickly change your mind:

1. It Clears Stubborn Breakouts
The number one cause of closed comedones (tiny bumps under the skin) and blackheads is leftover SPF sunscreen mixing with sweat inside your pores overnight. By thoroughly dissolving the SPF with an oil cleanser, your pores remain clear, drastically reducing acne breakouts.

2. Your Expensive Serums Will Actually Work
If you apply a €50 Vitamin C or Retinol serum over a microscopic layer of leftover makeup, the active ingredients cannot penetrate the skin. They just sit uselessly on top of the grime. Double cleansing guarantees a perfectly blank, clean canvas, allowing your expensive skincare products to absorb deeply and work 100% effectively.

3. It Protects Your Skin Barrier
When people only use one cleanser, they tend to scrub aggressively or use harsh, highly alkaline soaps to try and get their waterproof makeup off. This violent scrubbing destroys the skin’s natural moisture barrier, leading to severe redness and dehydration. Double cleansing relies on gentle chemistry, not harsh physical scrubbing, leaving your skin calm and hydrated.

💡 A Skincare Tip from the Folime Team:
Do I need to double cleanse in the morning? No! You only need to double cleanse at night to remove the day’s SPF, makeup, and pollution. In the morning, your face only has the remnants of your nighttime moisturizer and a little sweat. A simple splash of water or a very gentle single cleanse is more than enough to start your day!
