The Ultimate Winter Skincare Survival Guide: How to Stop Dry, Red, and Flaky Skin


As the temperature drops and the winter wind begins to howl, you swap your light summer jackets for heavy wool coats. But do you do the same thing for your skincare routine?

Most people use the exact same face wash and moisturizer 365 days a year. However, when winter arrives, your skin is suddenly subjected to absolute environmental chaos. Foaming cleansers rely on heavy surfactants (sulfates) that create those satisfying bubbles. Unfortunately, these bubbles strip away every last drop of natural oil your skin desperately needs to protect itself from the cold.

  • The Winter Swap: Switch to a Cream or Balm Cleanser. These milky formulas do not foam at all. They gently dissolve makeup and dirt while simultaneously depositing a layer of hydrating lipids back onto your skin. Your face should feel soft and plump after washing, never tight or «squeaky clean.»

2. Stop Taking Boiling Hot Showers

When you are freezing to the bone after a long commute, standing under a boiling hot shower feels like pure heaven. For your skin, however, it is absolute hell.

Extreme hot water melts away your skin’s natural protective oils much faster than lukewarm water. This leaves your skin barrier completely compromised, leading to immediate dehydration, severe winter itch, and flare-ups of eczema or rosacea.

During the night, your skin loses a massive amount of water through a biological process called Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). In a dry, heated bedroom, this water loss is accelerated, causing you to wake up looking dull and wrinkled.
